Making a cane, or felted rope is a satisfying way to make great felted beads. We will lay down layers of dyed wool and then roll it up and felt it into a fat rope with hot soapy water. The felted rope is then cut into slices to reveal the fabulous cross-section. The finished product can be strung into bracelets or necklaces, used as buttons, or kept in one's pocket for luck.

It's our great pleasure to introducing our next artists in residence, Bill Will & LeBrie Rich (Pen Felt) from Portland, Oregon, USA. Bill and LeBrie will be in residence at Kayamori House during May 2012.

Rice Harvest

If you have ever had a meal at Kayamori House you will probably have eaten rice made here in the village by Okata-san. It feels good to know exactly where our food comes from, how it was made, and who by.

Treasure Hunt

Nagashi Somen lunch, games, and a treasure hunt around the house and village. Great fun, and interesting people!

Herbs are relatively easy to grow and there is a demand for herbs in Osaka, primarily mint used in the cocktail Mojito. Being new to this whole farming deal, we've decided producing mint might be a good thing to start with.

We've been really lucky to have lots of keen volunteers to help out on the farm and renovation of the house since we moved in January 2011. It's a lot of work starting a project like Kayamori House and we couldn't have done it without the help, energy, and enthusiasm of many kind people. A big thanks to everyone who has helped so far.

The talented photographer and insect expert, Mushi-man (Yoshihiro Muramatsu) led this workshop exploring the plethora of bizarre insects to be found around Kayamori and the forest. We spent the morning taking photos, had Nagashi Somen for lunch, then spend the afternoon each making a mini booklet with the photos.

Scones are a British quick bread traditionally enjoyed with lots of cream and jam while sitting in a sunny garden drinking tea. Due to the sweltering Japanese summer, we decided to eat them with ice cream, but managed to get out into the garden in the evening once it was a bit cooler.

Felt Mistress @ Jonathan E, artists in residence from HeadSpace, produced an exclusive monster kit for this workshop. It was a great way to spend a rainy day for the 16 people who came to visit the farmhouse.

30 Apr 2011

The workshop was led by Mexican artist, Uriel Marin, who instructed how to make an important part of Mexican culture, the Piñata. Some very creative and weird Piñatas were made by the participants! There was also delicious organic Indian curry for lunch made from fresh local produce.
